Best Warm-Weather Family Vacations for Winter: 7 Sunny Escapes
Best Warm-Weather Family Vacations for Winter | 7 Sunny Trips By January, I am officially ready for sunshine.
The holidays are over, it gets dark way too early, everyone has been stuck inside, and suddenly a family vacation somewhere warm sounds VERY appealing.
If you're searching for the best warm-weather family vacations for winter, the good news is that you have plenty of options and you don't necessarily need to travel halfway around the world to find sunshine.
From an easy luxury getaway at Sea Island to Costa Rica, Mexico, Hawaii and a Caribbean cruise, there are warm winter vacations for every kind of family. The trick is choosing the one that makes sense for your family.
Do you want to spend the entire week at a resort? Do your kids need activities? Are you bringing grandparents? Do you want adventure? Or would everyone be perfectly happy if the itinerary simply said POOL for five days straight?
Let's find your winter escape.
TL;DR: Where Is the Best Place to Take a Family Vacation in Winter?
Some of my favorite warm-weather family vacations for winter include Costa Rica, Mexico, Hawaii, Caribbean cruises, Sea Island, Florida and the Caribbean.
For an adventurous family, I'd look at Costa Rica or Hawaii. For an easy resort vacation, Mexico or the Caribbean can be fantastic. Cruises are especially good for families with different ages or multigenerational groups, while Sea Island is one of my favorite options if you want luxury without leaving the continental U.S.
And if you're traveling during winter break, Presidents' Day weekend or spring break, don't wait until the last minute. Those school-break dates can fill quickly.
1. Costa Rica for Families Who Want Adventure AND a Beach Vacation
Costa Rica is one of those destinations I recommend over and over because you don't have to choose between adventure and relaxation.
You can zip-line through the rainforest, see wildlife, explore waterfalls, spend time on the beach and still come back to an incredible resort at the end of the day.
For families, I especially love Peninsula Papagayo.

Dani has previously featured Four Seasons Resort Peninsula Papagayo, Costa Rica, and this is exactly the kind of winter trip where it shines. The resort combines beaches, pools and luxury with access to the outdoor experiences that make Costa Rica worth traveling for.
Costa Rica's Pacific dry season generally runs from around December through April, making winter an especially appealing time to visit that part of the country.

This is a trip I'd recommend for the family that doesn't want to sit beside the pool for seven straight days—but still wants the option to do exactly that.
Best for: Active families, nature lovers, older kids and families who want luxury + adventure.
2. Mexico for an Easy All-Inclusive Winter Family Vacation
Sometimes you don't want an itinerary. You want to arrive at the resort, put on a swimsuit and have someone else handle everything for the next five days.
That's where Mexico comes in.
Mexico has some fantastic family-friendly all-inclusive resorts, particularly around Cancun, Riviera Maya, Punta Mita and Los Cabos. Depending on the property, you can find kids clubs, multiple pools, water activities, entertainment, great dining and spaces where parents can actually relax too.
I especially like an all-inclusive for families because so much is already taken care of.
You're not pulling out your wallet every time someone wants a snack. You're not researching a restaurant for every meal. And you're not trying to figure out how to entertain the kids all day.
It's also an easy option for multigenerational trips because everyone can do their own thing during the day and meet back up for dinner.
Best for: Families who want an easy beach vacation, all-inclusive resorts and minimal day-to-day planning.

3. Take a Caribbean Cruise for a Warm Winter Family Vacation
You already know I love cruising for families. And winter is such a good time to consider one.
Instead of choosing one resort or island for the entire trip, you can wake up somewhere new throughout your vacation and you only have to unpack once.
Cruises are also one of my favorite recommendations for a multigenerational family vacation because they solve the How do we find something everyone wants to do? problem.

Toddlers, teenagers, parents and grandparents don't need the same itinerary.
The kids can head to age-appropriate clubs. Someone else can sit by the pool. The adventurous group can go on an excursion. And everyone can meet back up for dinner and a show.
Depending on your family, we can look at options like Disney Cruise Line or Royal Caribbean and then choose the ship and itinerary that make the most sense.
And remember: I don't choose a cruise based solely on which ship is newest or has the most things onboard. The itinerary matters too.
Best for: Multigenerational families, first-time cruisers and families who want activities built into the vacation.
4. Hawaii for a Bucket-List Winter Family Vacation
If you've been waiting for an excuse to finally take the kids to Hawaii, escaping winter sounds like a pretty good one to me.
Hawaii gives families that tropical vacation feeling without leaving the United States, and you can make the trip as active or relaxed as you'd like.
Beach day? Absolutely. Snorkeling? Yes. Hiking and waterfalls? We've got those too.Want to spend the entire afternoon at the resort pool? Also acceptable.

The important thing is choosing the right Hawaiian island and resort for your family. A family that wants nonstop activities may need something very different from one planning a slower luxury getaway with little kids.
One winter consideration: Hawaii does experience more variable weather during its winter months, and ocean conditions can differ significantly by island and coast. That's one reason I don't recommend choosing a resort solely because you found a pretty picture online.
Best for: Bucket-list family vacations, active families and travelers who want beach + culture + adventure.
5. The Caribbean for a Classic Warm-Weather Winter Escape
If your winter vacation vision is basically: turquoise water + white sand + absolutely no coat...let's talk Caribbean.
The Caribbean gives us SO many different options, which is why I don't love giving families a blanket recommendation like “just go to the Caribbean.”
Which island? Which resort? All-inclusive or not?
Do you want a fantastic beach? Great snorkeling? Kids club? Water park? Luxury? Excursions? A direct flight? Those details matter.

For some families, the perfect trip is a larger resort with endless activities for kids. For another, it's a quieter luxury property where the entire family can slow down.
This is exactly where working with a travel advisor helps because we can match the island and resort to your family, rather than simply picking whichever resort happens to show up first on Google.
Best for: Beach-loving families, resort vacations and families who really just need some SUN.
6. Sea Island, Georgia for a Luxury Winter Getaway Closer to Home
Sea Island might not be the first destination that comes to mind when you search for a warm family vacation in winter, which is exactly why I like including it.
I've shared Sea Island before because it's such a special option for families, especially when you want a luxury resort experience without a major international trip.
It's important to set expectations here: Sea Island is not a tropical beach vacation in January.
Winter weather in coastal Georgia can be mild, but temperatures vary, and you shouldn't book it expecting Caribbean-style swimming weather.
What you do get is a beautiful coastal destination, resort activities, fantastic accommodations and an easy change of scenery when you need to get away.
For larger or multigenerational families, I especially love the option of a Sea Island cottage. Everyone gets more room to spread out while you still have that destination-resort experience.
And if your winter trip is closer to late February or March? Even better.
Best for: Families wanting a closer-to-home luxury escape, multigenerational trips and travelers who don't need tropical temperatures.
7. Florida for an Easy Warm-Weather Family Vacation
Sometimes the easiest answer is also a really good one. Go to Florida.
Depending on your family, that could mean a beach resort, Orlando, or—yes—Walt Disney World.
Florida works particularly well when you're looking for a winter escape but don't want the added logistics of an international trip.
And if your kids are Disney age, winter can be a great excuse to turn your warm-weather getaway into a
Disney vacation.
I've shared a lot of Disney planning resources because a Disney trip with young kids can be amazing when it's planned around your family. You don't need to spend every waking minute in the parks.
Stay somewhere you love. Build in a resort day. Use the pool. Take a midday break.
A Disney vacation can still feel like a vacation.
Best for: Families wanting an easy domestic getaway, Disney families and shorter winter trips.
What's the Best Warm Winter Vacation for Families With Young Kids?
With babies and toddlers, I prioritize ease.
How long is the flight? How complicated is the airport transfer? Will you need a car seat? Is there a kids club your child is actually old enough to use? Can we get a room configuration that works for naps and early bedtimes? Is there food your child will eat? How hard will it be to get from your room to the pool or beach with all the stuff little kids somehow require?
This is why the “best” resort on a Top 10 list isn't necessarily the best resort for your family.
With little kids, sometimes the resort that makes everything easier wins.
What Are the Best Warm Winter Vacations for Multigenerational Families?
For multigenerational travel, cruises, all-inclusive resorts and larger resort accommodations are usually at the top of my list.
I don't want Grandma and Grandpa forced to spend every minute doing toddler activities. And I don't want parents spending the entire vacation coordinating twelve people's schedules.
A cruise works beautifully because everyone has options.
An all-inclusive resort gives everyone flexibility without worrying about where every meal will be.
And something like a Sea Island cottage can give the family a home base where everyone stays together while still having enough space.
The goal isn't for everyone to do everything together. It's to make spending time together easy.
Warm Winter Vacation With Kids: Beach or Adventure?
Here's the question I want you to answer before choosing a destination: What do you want this vacation to feel like?
If the answer is I want to lie down and not think, let's look at Mexico or the Caribbean.
If you want your kids to experience somewhere completely different and come home talking about wildlife, waterfalls and zip lines, Costa Rica.
If you want something bucket-list worthy with a mix of everything, Hawaii.
If Grandma, Grandpa, teenagers and little kids are all coming, a cruise deserves serious consideration.
If you want luxury without a huge trip, Sea Island.
And if you want an easy domestic trip with plenty for the kids to do, Florida.
Start with how you want to travel. Then choose the destination.
When Should You Book a Winter Family Vacation?
Earlier than most families think, especially if you're traveling during a school break.
Christmas and New Year's, Martin Luther King Jr. weekend, Presidents' Day weekend and spring break concentrate a lot of family travel into relatively short windows.
The best family-friendly rooms, suites, connecting rooms and popular resorts can become limited. And if you're trying to coordinate a multigenerational vacation? I would start even earlier.
You don't necessarily need to book every single component at the same time, but starting early gives us the ability to compare resorts, flights and room options rather than simply choosing from whatever is left.

Ready to Escape Winter?
If your family is officially over coats, gray skies and being stuck inside, I'll happily help you trade them for a swimsuit.
But I don't want to send you to a destination simply because it's warm.
I'll help you figure out which destination, resort, cruise or itinerary makes the most sense for your family based on your kids' ages, budget, travel dates, priorities and how you actually want to spend the vacation.
Then I'll take care of the details so you can focus on the fun part.
