Sea Island Georgia Resort Review: A Luxury Family Vacation Destination

If you’re looking for a destination that feels elevated, thoughtful, and completely different from the typical beach resort, Sea Island, Georgia is one of those places that truly stands out.

I recently visited for a quick trip, and from the moment I arrived, I could tell this wasn’t just another resort (and I wished my stay was longer). Driving in from the Jacksonville airport (about an hour away), you pass through winding roads lined with Spanish moss-draped trees and it immediately feels like you’ve stepped into something special.

Sea Island is what I would call quintessential Southern luxury… refined, intentional, and full of experiences that go far beyond just sitting by the pool.

Horseback Riding on the Beach: A Bucket List Experience

Have you ever ridden a horse on the beach?

This was hands-down one of the most magical experiences of my entire trip. I rode a horse named Traveler (yes, I remember his name because it was that special), and there’s just something about being on the shoreline, feeling the ocean breeze, and taking in those views that’s hard to put into words!

And honestly? Pictures don’t do it justice.

What really stood out to me was how well the equestrian team cares for their horses. You can tell these animals are deeply loved and beautifully maintained. It’s not just an activity,  it’s a peaceful, immersive experience that connects you to the environment in such a unique way.

Sea Island Bagpiper Nightly Tradition You Won’t Find Anywhere Else

What would you do if a bagpiper showed up at your resort every evening? At The Lodge at Sea Island, this is a real tradition and it might have been one of my favorite surprises of the trip.

Each evening, you can gather on the back lawn overlooking the water, dressed up for dinner, drinks in hand, while a bagpiper plays for about an hour to “put the golf courses to bed.”

The entire experience feels intentional and elevated… something that creates a sense of occasion that’s rare to find.

Afterward, head into the steakhouse for dinner, and the entire evening just flows beautifully.

The Lodge itself has a completely different feel from the main Cloister property. Imagine dark wood interiors, plaid details, and even an 18-hole putting green out back. It’s about a five-minute shuttle ride, but it feels like its own little world.

Unexpected Activities That Make the Experience

Sea Island offers so much more than your typical beach resort and some of the most memorable experiences are the ones you wouldn’t expect.

Falconry was one of the most unique things I’ve ever done. I spent time learning from an expert with 20+ years of experience, working hands-on with these incredible birds while also learning how they support the resort’s ecosystem.

The Shooting School was another highlight. The instructors were some of the best I’ve experienced in any activity, and the entire experience was both fun and surprisingly rewarding (even if you’re sore the next day!). Beyond that, Sea Island offers:

• Kids club for families

• World-class golf

• An incredible fitness center (Pilates studio, indoor pool, tennis, pickleball)

• Dining experiences that range from casual to truly elevated

There really is something for everyone!

The Details That Make Sea Island Special

What sets Sea Island apart isn’t just the activities, it’s the attention to detail.

How Far in Advance Should You Book Sea Island?

This is one of the biggest takeaways from my trip: Sea Island requires planning.

In many ways, it operates similarly to Disney:

• Reservations open 9 months in advance

• Many activities should be booked at least 8 weeks out

• Popular experiences (like the shooting school, wine cellar dinner, and prime dining times) fill quickly

If you wait until you arrive to book activities, you’ll likely miss out on the experiences that make this resort so special. This is exactly where working with a travel advisor makes a difference. I help:
