Best Christmas Vacation Ideas for Families: 5 Magical Trips for the Holidays
There’s something really special about spending Christmas away from home as a family.
Maybe your dream Christmas includes cold weather, twinkling lights, and a destination that feels straight out of Europe. Maybe you would happily trade snow boots for swimsuits and spend Christmas morning somewhere warm. Or maybe your kids would choose Cinderella Castle covered in holiday decorations every single time.
The best part is that there really isn't one “best” Christmas vacation for every family.
As a travel advisor, I look at how your family actually likes to travel. Do you want to relax? Explore? Go somewhere warm? Experience all the traditional Christmas magic? Are you traveling with toddlers, teenagers, grandparents...or all of the above?
If you're thinking about traveling over Christmas or winter break, here are five of my favorite Christmas vacation ideas for families.
TL;DR: Where Should Families Go for Christmas Vacation?
Some of my favorite Christmas vacations for families are Québec City for a European-style winter getaway, a Christmas cruise for an easy multigenerational trip, Sea Island for a cozy luxury Christmas, a warm-weather beach vacation, and Walt Disney World for all the holiday magic.
The most important thing to remember is that Christmas and winter break are incredibly popular travel periods. If your family has specific dates, resorts, room categories, or flights in mind, planning early gives you significantly more options.
1. Québec City: A European-Style Christmas Vacation Without Flying to Europe
Want the cobblestone streets, Christmas markets, snow, and old-world charm of Europe without actually taking the family all the way to Europe? Go to Québec City.
This is one of my favorite ideas for families who want a true winter Christmas vacation. Old Québec feels incredibly European, especially during the holidays, with decorated historic streets, Christmas markets, seasonal events, and plenty of opportunities to embrace the cold weather.
Current 2026 Christmas travel guides are specifically recommending Québec City for families looking for a European-style Christmas closer to home, and Québec City's German Christmas Market runs through December 23 in 2026.
And I would absolutely stay at Fairmont Le Château Frontenac.
It's the iconic castle-like hotel you see overlooking Old Québec, and staying there makes the hotel part of the Christmas experience instead of simply somewhere to sleep.
You can spend your days exploring Old Québec, visiting Christmas markets, warming up with something delicious, and enjoying the kind of snowy Christmas atmosphere most of us picture when we think about the holidays.
Best for: Families searching for a snowy Christmas vacation, Empty Nesters wanting to get away from the Christmas chaos, European-style Christmas destination, or winter getaway without traveling all the way to Europe.
2. Take a Christmas Cruise for an Easy Multigenerational Family Vacation
If you're trying to plan a Christmas trip for toddlers, teenagers, parents and grandparents, this might be my favorite option. Take a cruise.
Cruises are one of my go-to recommendations for multigenerational family vacations because everyone can have a completely different vacation while still traveling together.
The kids have kids clubs and activities. Teenagers can find spaces designed for them. Parents can actually relax. Grandparents don't have to participate in every activity. And then everyone can come back together for dinner, shows, excursions, or a beach day.

Christmas sailings can also include holiday decorations, special meals, entertainment, and seasonal programming depending on the cruise line and itinerary.
And while I love that cruising feels almost all-inclusive, I would make one small distinction here: not everything is included in a standard cruise fare. Your accommodations, many meals, entertainment, and lots of onboard activities typically are, while things like excursions, specialty dining, drinks, Wi-Fi, and gratuities may cost extra depending on the cruise line.
Disney Cruise Line can be incredible for families wanting that Disney Christmas magic, while Royal Caribbean is another option I love for families who want a ship with tons to do.
Best for: Multigenerational Christmas vacations, families with kids of different ages, and anyone who doesn't want to plan every minute of the trip
3. Sea Island, Georgia: A Cozy Luxury Christmas Vacation for Families
This one feels very specific because it's not going to appear on every generic Christmas vacation list, but stay with me…. For a family that wants something luxurious and festive but doesn't necessarily want to fly internationally or spend Christmas week running around a theme park, I love Sea Island, Georgia.
And for Christmas specifically? Rent a cottage.
Having your own cottage gives your family room to settle in and make the holiday feel like Christmas. You can put up a Christmas tree, bring your family's traditions with you, have space for everyone to gather, and still have access to the resort experience.
That's especially appealing if you love the idea of traveling for Christmas but worry that staying in a traditional hotel room won't quite feel like Christmas morning.
It's also a great option for a multigenerational trip when you want everyone together under one roof without giving up the service and amenities of a luxury resort.
Best for: Families who want a luxury Christmas getaway, multigenerational trips, and anyone who wants to travel without giving up their Christmas-at-home traditions.
4. Escape the Cold With a Warm-Weather Christmas Vacation
Who says Christmas morning has to involve snow? Maybe sand is more your vibe!
For some families, the best Christmas vacation means waking up somewhere warm, putting on a swimsuit, and heading straight to the beach.
And I fully support that version of Christmas.
The Caribbean, Mexico, and other tropical destinations can be great choices for families looking for a warm Christmas vacation or Christmas beach vacation. Current holiday-travel searches and guides continue to feature warm-weather and all-inclusive trips heavily for families, particularly destinations such as the Caribbean and Mexico.

Depending on your family, I can look for a resort with an incredible kids club and nonstop activities or something quieter and more luxurious.
This can be especially nice for parents who spend the entire month of December shopping, wrapping presents, attending school events, cooking, hosting, and keeping track of approximately 4,000 holiday-related things.
Instead of hosting Christmas dinner, someone else cooks it.Instead of cleaning up afterward, you go back to the beach. Sounds pretty good to me.
Best for: Families looking for warm Christmas vacation destinations, beach vacations, and a relaxing winter break.
5. Walt Disney World at Christmas for the Ultimate Holiday Magic
And, of course, we have to talk about Disney World at Christmas.

If your family already loves Disney, there is something incredibly special about experiencing Walt Disney World covered in Christmas decorations.
The resorts are decorated, the parks feel completely transformed, there are seasonal treats and entertainment, and you'll find holiday experiences throughout Walt Disney World.
This is one of those trips where the destination itself becomes part of your family's Christmas traditions.
That said, there's an important distinction between visiting Disney during the Christmas season and visiting Disney over Christmas week.
Christmas week is incredibly popular. If your main goal is simply experiencing Disney's decorations and holiday festivities, we can also look at dates earlier in the season.
If your dream is waking up at Walt Disney World on Christmas morning, though? We can absolutely plan for that. We just need to approach the trip strategically and start early.
Best for: Disney-loving families, families with young kids, and anyone who wants a Christmas vacation packed with festive activities and decorations.
Warm Christmas Vacation or Winter Wonderland: Which Is Better?
This is one of the first questions I would ask you.
Do you picture your family wearing coats, walking through Christmas markets, drinking hot chocolate, and hoping for snow? Québec City.
Do you want everyone from the toddler to Grandma entertained without coordinating a dozen different activities? Cruise.
Want something luxurious, cozy, and a little closer to home where you can still wake up around your own Christmas tree? Sea Island cottage.
Ready to completely escape winter? Beach vacation.
Want to go ALL IN on Christmas magic? Disney World.
There isn't a universally perfect Christmas destination. There's just the one that makes the most sense for your family.
How Far in Advance Should You Book a Family Christmas Vacation?
Christmas is one trip where I really don't recommend waiting until the last minute.
Families are traveling within the same limited school-break window, which means the most desirable flights, cruises, family-friendly rooms, suites, cottages, and resorts can become limited.
Current 2026 holiday travel guidance similarly recommends starting early, particularly when families have specific destinations or travel dates in mind.
I go much deeper into this in my When to Book Holiday Travel guide, but the short version is this: If you already know you want to travel next Christmas, it's not too early to start planning.
Starting early doesn't mean we have to book every piece of the vacation today. It means we can make a plan, know when different booking windows open, and secure the important pieces at the right time.
How Do You Choose the Best Christmas Vacation for Your Family?
Before I recommend a Christmas destination, I want to know what your family actually wants out of the trip.
How old are your kids? Are grandparents coming? Do you want snow or sunshine? Do you want a packed itinerary or somewhere you can slow down? How far are you willing to fly? And which Christmas traditions are important enough that you want to bring them with you?
That's why two families can ask me for the best place to travel for Christmas with kids and get two completely different answers.
My goal isn't to send you where everyone else is going. It's to plan the Christmas vacation your family will actually love.
FAQ: Christmas Vacation Ideas for Families
Where is the best place to travel for Christmas with family?

The Caribbean and Mexico are two popular choices for a warm-weather family Christmas vacation. Cruises can also be a great way to escape the cold while visiting several tropical destinations during one trip.
