When to Book Holiday Travel: A Travel Advisor’s Guide to Thanksgiving, Christmas & Winter Break
TL;DR
The best time to start planning Thanksgiving, Christmas, and winter break travel is earlier than you think. While the cheapest airfare may appear closer to your travel dates, popular resorts, cruises, room categories, and convenient flight options can disappear much sooner. If you’re traveling for the holidays in 2026, especially with kids or internationally, start planning now so you have more choices and less stress.
When to Book Holiday Travel: A Travel Advisor’s Guide to Thanksgiving, Christmas & Winter Break

If you’re wondering when to book holiday travel for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or winter break, my answer is probably earlier than you think.
And if you’re reading this in August or September thinking, Wait...am I really supposed to be planning Christmas already?
Yes.
Not because I want to rush us through fall. I love fall! But holiday travel is one of those things that gets harder (not easier) the longer you wait.
Flights fill up. The best hotel rooms disappear. Resorts sell out over popular dates. The nonstop flight that worked perfectly for your family suddenly costs twice as much or has no seats together. And if you’re traveling with kids, sometimes the cheapest option on paper is absolutely not the option you want in real life.
Holiday travel is different from taking a random trip in February. Your dates are usually less flexible, everyone else is traveling at the same time, and you’re competing for a limited number of flights, rooms, reservations and experiences.
So, let’s talk about when you should actually book Thanksgiving travel, Christmas vacations and winter break trips in 2026 and what I would be doing now if you haven’t planned yours yet.
When Should You Book Holiday Travel in 2026?
There isn't one magic date when every holiday vacation suddenly becomes more expensive.
It depends on where you're going, whether you're flying domestically or internationally, how flexible your dates are, how particular you are about your hotel and what kind of trip you're planning.
For airfare specifically, recent Google Flights data found that domestic Thanksgiving flights have historically been lowest around 35 days before departure, with a lower-price window of approximately 24–59 days out. For Christmas, prices have historically been lowest around 51 days before departure, with a lower-price window of approximately 32–73 days out.
But here's the part I want families to understand: I would not use those numbers as the date to START planning your holiday vacation.
There is a huge difference between waiting to purchase airfare while we're watching prices and waiting to decide where your family is going altogether.
If we're planning Disney, a cruise, a popular resort, Europe, the Caribbean or another destination where you care about the hotel, room category and overall experience, I want to start much sooner.
By the time we reach the perfect airfare window, I want to know where you're going.

When Should You Book Thanksgiving Flights for 2026?
Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26, 2026, which means we're already at the point where I want Thanksgiving travelers making decisions.
If you're simply flying to Grandma's house and only need airfare, we have a little more flexibility. We can start watching flights now, set alerts and make a decision when we see an itinerary and price we're comfortable with.
If you're taking an actual Thanksgiving vacation, though? Let's start planning (contact form here).
Thanksgiving is tricky because most families are working around the exact same school and work calendar. You might only have Wednesday through Sunday available, which means you're competing with a LOT of other travelers for the same flights.
And this is where flexibility can save you.
Could you leave Monday instead of Wednesday? Stay through the following Monday? Fly Thanksgiving morning? Use a nearby airport?
Those little adjustments can completely change your options.
For 2026 specifically, airfare is another reason I don't want families assuming waiting will automatically result in a deal. Recent reporting shows Thanksgiving fares are already running higher than last year, making it even more important to compare options rather than bank on a last-minute price drop.
When Should You Book Christmas Flights for 2026?

If you want to travel for Christmas or New Year's 2026, I would start planning now.
Christmas travel has the same problem as Thanksgiving but for a longer stretch of time. Families are working around school calendars, holiday traditions and PTO, which makes December dates incredibly valuable.
Historically, Google Flights data shows the lower-price window for domestic Christmas airfare falls roughly 32–73 days before departure, with the lowest average prices around 51 days out.
That puts a lot of the airfare-buying sweet spot between mid-October and mid-November.
But again… I don't want to wait until October to start figuring out where you're going.
Especially if your dream Christmas trip involves a specific luxury resort, Disney, a cruise, a ski destination, Europe, the Caribbean or a particular room type.
There are only so many suites.
There are only so many connecting rooms.
There are only so many nonstop flights at reasonable times.
And there are only so many rooms with that gorgeous view you saved on Instagram six months ago.
Holiday travel is one of those times when having options matters more than chasing the absolute lowest possible price.
Is August Too Early to Book Christmas Travel?
No! And I know that sounds crazy when you're still wearing a swimsuit and buying school supplies.
August is actually a great time to start the conversation about Christmas travel because we have options.
We can compare destinations. We can look at different dates. We can decide whether your family would be happier at Disney, on a beach, on a cruise, in Europe or somewhere completely different.
If airfare isn't where we want it yet, we can monitor it.
That's very different from calling me in December and saying, "We want to go somewhere amazing next week!"
Can we sometimes make that happen? Sure. Are you going to have nearly as many choices? Absolutely not.
When Should You Book Winter Break Travel?
For families with school-aged children, winter break travel is one of the biggest trips of the year because you can travel without pulling kids out of school. Unfortunately, everyone else had the same idea.
If you're planning to travel between Christmas and New Year's, I consider that peak holiday travel… not a normal winter vacation.
For domestic travel, I want to start researching now and have a plan well before December.

When Should You Book International Holiday Travel?
For international winter break travel, I want to move even faster. Google Flights' historical pricing data shows that international fares tend to be lowest 49 days or more before departure and generally don't become cheaper as the trip gets closer.
So if your family is dreaming about spending winter break in Europe or another international destination, I would not wait around hoping for a magical last-minute deal.
Let's figure out what makes sense and start building the trip.
Should You Book Holiday Travel Now or Wait for a Deal?
This is probably one of the biggest questions I get: "Should we book now or wait for a deal?"
It depends.
If your family says, "We don't care where we go, what day we leave, what hotel we stay at or what time we fly," then sure… we have room to play.
But most families aren't actually that flexible.
You probably have a specific week your kids are out of school. You may need nonstop flights because you're traveling with toddlers. You might need a room that sleeps five. Maybe you want connecting rooms because Grandma and Grandpa are coming. Or there is one resort you've saved for two years and THIS is the year you're finally going.
In that situation, I care about value, not just finding the cheapest possible price.
Saving $150 on airfare isn't necessarily a win if it means adding a connection, leaving home at 4 a.m. and spending six extra hours traveling with three kids.
I will always look at the whole trip.
How Far in Advance Should You Book a Family Holiday Vacation?
This is also where working with a travel advisor can be really helpful. You may come to me thinking you want Disney World for Christmas.
After talking through your family, budget and priorities, maybe we realize a Disney Cruise makes more sense.
Or you were convinced you wanted the Caribbean, but flights are outrageous for your exact dates and there's another resort that gives you a much better experience for the money.
Maybe you want Europe but don't know which city makes the most sense with young children.
This is my favorite part.
I don't just pull up one hotel and send you a price.
I look at the dates. The flights. The resort. The location. Transportation. Room options. Your kids' ages. How much running around you actually want to do. And then we compare everything to figure out what makes the most sense for your family.
Because your holiday vacation should feel like a vacation.

2026 Holiday Travel Booking Timeline: Thanksgiving, Christmas & Winter Break
If you want the simplest possible version, here's how I would approach the rest of 2026:
August–September: Start planning Thanksgiving, Christmas and winter break vacations, especially cruises, Disney, luxury resorts and international travel.
September–October: Finalize Thanksgiving plans and closely monitor or book domestic airfare.
October–November: Lock in Christmas airfare if you haven't already and finalize remaining reservations and trip details.
December: Go enjoy your trip. Please don't make December the month we START planning Christmas.
There will always be exceptions, and sometimes I can pull together something fabulous at the last minute. But I would much rather have the time to compare your options than simply book whatever is left.

Holiday Travel FAQ
When should I book Thanksgiving travel for 2026?
Start planning your Thanksgiving trip in August or September, especially if you need specific travel dates, nonstop flights, or a popular resort. Thanksgiving 2026 falls on November 26, and flexibility around your departure and return dates can make a big difference.
When should I book Christmas flights for 2026?
For domestic Christmas flights, historical pricing data suggests lower fares can often appear roughly one to two months before departure. However, I recommend planning the overall trip much earlier so your hotel, resort, cruise, and preferred travel dates are secured before options become limited.
Is August too early to plan a Christmas vacation?
Not at all! August is actually a great time to begin planning Christmas and winter break travel. You’ll typically have more choices for destinations, hotels, room categories, and itineraries—and we can monitor airfare as your trip gets closer.
Should I wait for a last-minute holiday travel deal?
Only if you're extremely flexible. If you're traveling with kids, limited to school-break dates, need a specific room type, or have your heart set on a particular destination, waiting can leave you with fewer (and sometimes more expensive) options.
When should I book international travel for winter break?
The earlier, the better. International airfare generally benefits from booking farther in advance, and popular hotels and experiences can fill quickly over Christmas and New Year's. If you're considering Europe or another international destination for winter break, I recommend starting the planning process now.
