5 Best Disney World Resorts for Families (And How to Choose the Right One)

One of the biggest decisions when planning a Walt Disney World vacation is choosing where to stay and honestly, your resort can completely change how your trip feels.
Disney World is HUGE. Like… the size of San Francisco huge.
And while there’s no single resort that’s convenient to all four parks, choosing the right Disney resort can save you so much time, energy, and stress throughout your trip.
For me, the biggest factor when recommending Disney resorts is always logistics:
How are you getting to the parks?
How much walking is involved?
Are you relying on buses?
How convenient is it with strollers or tired kids at the end of the night?
Because trust me — transportation matters WAY more than most people realize.
Here are my favorite Disney World resorts and who I think each one is best for.
TL;DR: Best Disney World Resorts for Families
Grand Floridian → Best luxury Disney resort for princess-loving families
Contemporary Resort → Best Disney resort for convenience to Magic Kingdom
Polynesian Village Resort → Best tropical Disney resort for families
Disney Riviera Resort → Best modern Disney resort on the Skyliner
Beach Club & Yacht Club → Best Disney resort pool and Epcot access
Honorable mentions:
Animal Kingdom Lodge
Four Seasons Orlando at Walt Disney World
Why Deluxe Disney Resorts Are Worth It
Disney World resorts fall into three categories:
Value Resorts
Moderate Resorts
Deluxe Resorts
And honestly? I almost always recommend deluxe resorts first if they fit within your budget.
Why? Because deluxe resorts offer:
Larger rooms
Better pools
Better restaurants
Better transportation
Better locations
More amenities overall
At Disney, convenience is everything. The less time you spend waiting on buses and traveling around property, the more enjoyable and relaxing your vacation feels.
Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa
The Grand Floridian is probably the most iconic luxury resort at Walt Disney World. This resort feels elegant, classic, and incredibly “Disney” in the best way — especially for families with little girls who want that princess feeling from the moment they walk into the lobby.
What I love most:
Monorail access to Magic Kingdom and Epcot
Walking path to Magic Kingdom
Gorgeous lobby and atmosphere
Amazing dining options
Spacious rooms and luxury feel
Being able to walk back from Magic Kingdom at the end of the night is honestly one of the biggest perks of staying here. It’s hard to overstate how valuable that convenience becomes after fireworks with tired kids and strollers.
Disney’s Contemporary Resort
The Contemporary is one of the best Disney resorts for families who prioritize convenience. The monorail literally runs through the center of the lobby, which kids absolutely love.
This resort has:
Walking access to Magic Kingdom
Monorail access to Epcot
Incredible transportation convenience
Mid-century modern rooms themed to The Incredibles
I especially love this resort for families with little boys or high-energy kids because the overall atmosphere feels fun, active, and exciting.
And again — being able to walk to Magic Kingdom is a game changer!
Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort
The Polynesian is kind of the perfect middle ground resort for families. The rooms are lightly themed to Moana, which gives it just enough Disney theming without feeling over-the-top.
What families love:
Monorail access
Boat transportation to Magic Kingdom
Incredible pool
Tropical atmosphere
Great dining options
The Polynesian feels very relaxed and vacation-like while still keeping you close to the parks.
The only reason I rank it slightly behind the Grand Floridian and Contemporary is because you can’t realistically walk to Magic Kingdom — but the monorail and boats are still fantastic options.
Why Monorail Resorts Are So Popular
The Grand Floridian, Contemporary, and Polynesian are often called the “monorail resorts,” and for good reason. These resorts give you direct access to Magic Kingdom and Epcot.
That means for 2–3 days of your trip, you can avoid buses almost entirely. And if you’ve ever folded a stroller while juggling exhausted kids after a long park day… you understand why that matters. The convenience alone makes these resorts worth considering.
Disney’s Riviera Resort
The Riviera is one of Disney’s newer deluxe resorts, and it’s absolutely beautiful. This resort feels elevated, modern, and peaceful while still staying very family-friendly.
What I love:
Skyliner access to Epcot and Hollywood Studios
Gorgeous rooms
Great food
Beautiful pool area
More relaxed atmosphere
The Skyliner is also surprisingly fun for kids and much easier than buses. The only downside is you’ll still need buses for:
Magic Kingdom
Animal Kingdom
But overall, Riviera is one of my favorite luxury Disney resorts.
Disney’s Beach Club & Yacht Club Resorts
Beach Club and Yacht Club are tied for me because they share what is arguably the BEST pool at Disney World.
These resorts are located along Disney’s BoardWalk area, which gives you:
Walking access to Epcot
Walking access to Hollywood Studios
Tons of nearby restaurants
Easy resort hopping
This is one of my favorite areas for families because even on non-park days, you have so much nearby. You can walk to:
Restaurants
Ice cream shops
Entertainment
Other deluxe resorts
It creates a really fun overall vacation atmosphere beyond just the parks themselves.
Honorable Mention: Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge
Animal Kingdom Lodge is one of the most stunning resorts at Disney World.
The lobby is jaw-dropping, and seeing giraffes and zebras from your balcony is such a unique Disney experience.
However, I only recommend this resort for the right family.
This resort works best for:
Families with teenagers
Adults-only trips
Guests comfortable using Uber/Lyft
Travelers prioritizing atmosphere over convenience
The biggest downside is transportation: Animal Kingdom Lodge relies heavily on buses to all four parks, which can get tiring quickly.
But if you’re okay with that tradeoff, it’s truly one of Disney’s most special resorts.
Honorable Mention: Four Seasons Orlando at Walt Disney World
If you want luxury while still staying inside the Disney bubble, Four Seasons Orlando is incredible. This resort offers:
Gorgeous rooms
Michelin-star dining
Amazing pool complex
Incredible kids club
Luxury-level service
It’s definitely a splurge, but it’s one of the best luxury family resorts in Orlando.
And because I’m a Preferred Partner advisor with Four Seasons, my clients often receive additional perks like:
Daily breakfast
Resort credits
Potential room upgrades
Early check-in and late checkout when available
Those added amenities can make a huge difference in the overall experience!
How to Choose the Best Disney Resort for Your Family
When helping families choose a Disney resort, I look at:
Your budget
Kids’ ages
Park priorities
Transportation preferences
Whether you’ll take rest days
Overall vacation style
Because the “best” Disney resort isn’t the same for every family. For some people, convenience matters most. For others, it’s theming, dining, pools, or atmosphere.
The key is finding the resort that makes your vacation feel easier and more enjoyable.
